Newly revealed concept art for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness by artist Darrell Warner reveals Benedict Cumberbatch as a Strange variant named Marvellous Melvyn.

Before Sam Raimi was brought on to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, with Michael Waldron joining him as the film’s writer, Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson was set to return for the sequel with Jade Bartlett penning the script.

That original version of the film included a variant of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange who was a street magician – Marvellous Melvyn.

Concept art from Darrell Warner shows how Benedict Cumberbatch may have looked as Marvellous Melvyn in the original version of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The image shows a version of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange dressed in a garish orange robe with a fez perched atop his head on a snowy New York sidewalk. “‘Marvellous Melvyn’ was a piece I completed very early on in the first lockdown following one aspect/alternative ‘Strange’ universe within the Scott Derrickson script,” Warner said of the design.

While ultimately not featured in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the Marvellous Melvyn concept art has gone on to be selected as a finalist in the “Live Action Feature Character” category at this year’s Concept Art Association Awards.
