Benedict Cumberbatch has talked about returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to play Doctor Strange again, saying he feels there is still more of the character to explore.
Benedict Cumberbatch’s Master of the Mystic Arts was last seen in the MCU in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The film, which has just been released on Disney Plus, saw Strange traversing multiple universes as he came into conflict with Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch and alternate versions of himself. The film finished on a cliffhanger as Strange appeared to be corrupted by the powers of the sinister Darkhold, granting him a third eye. A mid-credits scene saw him meet Charlize Theron’s Clea, who recruited him to help fix an incursion he had caused between universes.
Multiverse of Madness certainly seemed to set up future adventures for the MCU’s Doctor Strange and now the man playing him, Benedict Cumberbatch, has made clear that he hopes to explore where the character goes next.
Doctor Strange In The Dark Dimension
The mid-credits scene in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness appeared to show Benedict Cumberbatch’s Strange following Clea into the Dark Dimension – the domain of Dormammu, as seen in the first Doctor Strange movie. Should future movies continue to explore the character’s corruption resulting from his use of the Darkhold and his inclination towards Faustian temptation, this dangerous realm may be a good place to start.
While speaking to The New Indian Express about Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Benedict Cumberbatch was asked if there’s more of Strange in his future. The actor said he hopes he will get to explore the character again:
“I hope so. I would love to do another one. Doctor Strange is such a complex character and it feels like there is so much more to explore with him. He is such a brilliant character and I’m still having a wild time playing him.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Cumberbatch was asked where in the multiverse he might like to see Strange go next. “I rather like the idea of him popping up with Banana Man,” the actor revealed. “I was a big Banana Man fan as a kid and I like the idea of us going there.” Bananaman was a comedy superhero who used to appear in British comic, The Dandy. In the multiverse, anything is possible…
