Aaron Taylor-Johnson has called his version of Kraven The Hunter an animal lover.
Back in 2012, Sony was beginning to set up its own little Spider-Man cinematic universe to match what was going on with Marvel. These plans ultimately crashed and burned when The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which set up several of these films, underperformed at the box office and drew negative reactions from fans and critics. However, the studio opted to move forward with several solo films based on the hero’s antagonist.
The first of these was Tom Hardy’s Venom which was not well received by critics but was a massive box office success. With the film’s success, Sony began developing more Spider-Man spinoff films. These included Morbius, Madame Web, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven The Hunter.
In the comics, Kraven The Hunter is a Spider-Man antagonist who is a big game hunter. Obsessed with a need to prove himself as the world’s greatest hunter, Kraven set his eyes on the web-slinger, who he viewed as the greatest prey of all. The character has also, on occasion, acted as an ally of Spider-Man and as an anti-hero. The way Aaron Taylor-Johnson is describing his version of the character, however, seems to indicate that he will fall into the anti-hero role.
In a recent interview with Variety, Aaron Taylor-Johnson discussed his role as Kraven The Hunter where, oddly enough, he refers to the big game hunter as an animal lover:
“He’s just a hunter, a human with conviction. An animal lover and a protector of the natural world. He’s a very, very cool character.”
Aaron Taylor-Johnson is leading the cast of Kraven the Hunter and is joined by Russell Crowe, Fred Hechinger, Ariana DeBose, Christopher Abbott, Alessandro Nivola, and Levi Miller. The film is being directed by J.C. Chandor with a script by Matt Holloway, Art Marcum, and Richard Wenk. Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, and Matt Tolmach are producing the film.
