A series of alternate designs for Ewan McGregor’s Black Mask from Birds of Prey have been revealed.
One of the standouts in Birds of Prey was Ewan McGregor’s Black Mask, as the film marked the first live-action appearance for the iconic Batman villain. Ewan McGregor was praised for his take on Black Mask and making the character his own while also meshing well with the stylistic choices made by director Cathy Yan. One of the things that makes Black Mask so interesting is, of course, his famous mask. Finding the perfect mask that fit both Ewan McGregor’s swagger and Cathy Yan’s vision must have been tough, but the design team was able to pull it off with the perfect Black Mask design for Birds of Prey.
Now that Birds of Prey has hit cinemas, Kyle Brown, one of the concept artists behind the Black Mask design, took to Instagram to share some designs were in contention for the Ewan McGregor character. These designs offer us a variety of different looks at Black Mask from Birds of Prey. You can check out the Birds of Prey alternate designs for Ewan McGregor’s Black Mask below. In total, there are six alternate Black Mask designs that have just been shown in this post. There’s no telling as to how many alternate designs were made for Ewan McGregor’s villain in Birds of Prey. In the caption, Kyle Brown mentions how he had tow the line between the source material and the high fashion world that director Cathy Yan exhibited in Birds of Prey. Some of these alternate designs heavily lean into the militarization of the mask, while others seem to be more comical. All in all, the design seen on the big screen was perfect for Birds of Prey, but it would have been equally interesting to have seen Ewan McGregor wear different masks in the film.

Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.”
Directed by Cathy Yan from a script penned by Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, Ewan McGregor as Black Mask, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.
