Fans have been eagerly awaiting any news on the sequel to Black Dynamite ever since it was announced. The film’s co-writer and star Michael Jai White reveals the sequel’s script is finished, but the project won’t be released anytime soon.
Black Dynamite took the world by storm when it was released in 2009, acting as both a genius satire of the blaxploitation films of the ’70s while also maintaining the toe-curling action fans have grown to love from Michael Jai White. With the film’s spiritual successor Outlaw Johnny Black set to release later this month, White revealed that the script for a true Black Dynamite sequel is done, but behind-the-scenes troubles prevent it from being filmed:
“We’ve got some obstacles there. The biggest obstacle is the producers that I aligned myself with in the first place,” White told Heroic Hollywood. “That script was written, I wrote that script close to eight years ago, maybe ten years ago. And it’s just, it’s the powers that be that, just, poor communication and it’s kind of one of those things that Dave Chapelle ran into. Whereas before those who were financing kind of stayed out of the creative space, but unfortunately this situation, they don’t want to separate the business and the acting stuff.”
“I can only do something I know, I gotta be set up to be in a successful place where I’m able to deliver the movie that I need. So that’s unfortunately what that particular project… the obstacles with that one. But I have other things that I’m very happy about that don’t require that union.”
While it’s certainly disappointing for fans of Black Dynamite that the sequel is caught in limbo, it seems as though Michael Jai White has plenty of action-packed goodness coming down the pipeline at Jaigantic Studios, his new production company. In addition to the upcoming Outlaw Johnny Black, White teased a number of future projects, including his own spin on a classic horror franchise:
“Well yeah! In this whole Outlaw Johnny Black phase, my intention was always to do the hyper action movie via Black Dynamite and the Western, but I always wanted to do also the horror movie,” He explained. “Basically the ‘Blackula’ type of thing, and also a really cool hyper badass Kung-Fu movie that really kind of gives you that Shaw brothers kind of feel of that time period too. Those are the movies that I intend on doing and those are the movies that I am going to be doing. So you might see a lot of that action in something coming soon.”
Fans have been waiting to see Michael Jai White take on vampires ever since Blade raised the bar for action-horror, a character that White himself recently voiced in Marvel’s Midnight Suns. Between a new horror project, a Black Dynamite sequel waiting in the wings, and Outlaw Johnny Black set to revive the Western, it seems as though White is trying to make a name for himself as the king of modern action.
