The 95th Academy Awards ceremony was held this past Sunday to honor the achievements in cinema accomplished this past year. During the show, Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever took home the Oscar for Best Costume Design and made history in the process.
The Oscar for Best Costume Design was awarded to Ruth E. Carter, who served as the sole costume designer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This marks the second time Carter has won an Oscar for costume design, as she had previously won for 2019’s Black Panther, which marked the first time a Black woman had won the award for costume design. With ner newest Oscar, Carter has now become the only Black woman to be a two-time winner in any category.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was nominated for four other awards at the show, including Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Song, Best Visual Effects, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. While many fans thought that Angela Bassett would earn an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress for her role as Queen Ramonda, Carter was the only member of the cast and crew to win in their category.
What did HH think of the Black Panther sequel?
In Heroic Hollywood’s review of the movie Ryden Scarnato wrote “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever picks up after the events of Avengers: Endgame, with T’Challa’s death becoming permanent due to Boseman’s real-life passing and the story now following the world of Wakanda dealing with that grief. While the film is an ensemble, it ultimately rests on the shoulders of Letitia Wright’s Shuri and Angela Bassett’s Queen Ramonda.”
“When it comes to performances, everyone here is at the top of their game, and you can’t help but think that’s because of how intertwined the film is with real life. With Wright and Bassett serving as focal points, the two are the strongest of the bunch, with incredibly personal moments that are some of the most heartfelt we’ve ever seen in the MCU. Shuri’s larger role in the film, in particular, also works for those who might have reservations.”
