Is the Blade reboot finally being saved? Director Yann Demange confirms the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe project will be Rated R.
There’s been a lot of rumors circling around about the Blade reboot in recent weeks, with many fans worrying about the movie after it was revealed Logan writer Michael Green would be reworking it with a $100 million budget. However, it seems as if those fears may be a tad overblown, as the film’s director Yann Demange assures fans the project will be Rated R:
“They gave me the R, which is so important,” the director told Deadline. “I come out of this wanting to be more open, more vulnerable and bring a more personal aspect to my work. But for Blade, we are going to have fun because Mahershala is such a deep actor.”
“I’m excited to show a kind of ruthlessness, a roughness he has, that allows him to walk the earth in a particular way. I love him for that. He’s got a dignity and integrity, but there is a ferocity there that he usually keeps under the surface. I want to unleash that and put it on the screen.”
It’s certainly a relief for fans to hear that the project has found its footing tonally. Despite the reboot being announced in 2019, Blade still won’t hit theaters until 2025. Hopefully, the delays will ensure the project is worthy, not just of being Rated R in the MCU, but of the expectations of fans.
The Talent Behind Marvel’s Blade Movie
Yann Demange, known for directing White Boy Rick and ’71, is at the helm of Marvel’s Blade movie, with a script penned by Michael Green, who wrote Logan. Bassam Tariq was initially set to direct, but had to step down due to scheduling conflicts.
The original cast of Blade included Delroy Lindo, Aaron Pierre and Milan Ray, but it’s uncertain if they’re still attached to the project since it was supposed to begin production in November 2022 before undergoing a creative overhaul.
Blade is being produced by Marvel Studios veterans Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito and Eric Hauserman Carroll, with Bassam Tariq receiving an executive producer credit despite leaving the director’s chair. The movie is currently scheduled to hit theaters on February 14, 2025.
