Gangs of New York star Brendan Gleeson is joining the cast of Joker: Folie à Deux alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga.
Brendan Gleeson, known for a prestigious career including roles in Braveheart, 28 Days Later, Gangs of New York and the Harry Potter franchise has officially been cast in Warner Bros. Discovery’s upcoming sequel to 2019’s Joker.
The film sees Joaquin Phoenix reprise the role of Batman’s greatest enemy, the Joker, with Lady Gaga co-starring as Harley Quinn. It is believed to be a musical.
The Joker Sequel Is Taking Shape
It was recently confirmed that, so far, Joker: Folie à Deux is the only DC film to have been greenlit since the Warner Bros. Discovery merger and it’s shaping up to be another spectacle on the scale of the first film.
The casting of Brendan Gleeson, whose role in the DC film is not yet known, follows news that Joker: Folie à Deux would be filming in Los Angeles and boasts a $150 million budget, almost three times the budget of Joker.
Alongside Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz is reportedly in talks to also reprise her role from the first film for Joker: Folie à Deux. Beetz played Sophie Dumond in Joker, a neighbor of Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck, with whom he imagined a relationship.
Brendan Gleeson can next be seen in his upcoming film The Banshees of Inisherin, set for release this October. Gleeson stars in the film alongside Colin Farrell and Barry Keoghan, both of whom have also recently entered the DC universe, appearing in The Batman as the Penguin and the Joker respectively.
Here is the official synopsis for Joker:
Director Todd Phillips’ “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.
Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
Joker is available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital, while Folie à Deux will hit theaters on October 4, 2024. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the sequel, and subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
