One of the things Pacific Rim: Uprising will have to do is introduce filmgoers to the franchise’s new characters while stilling tying back in to the first film, especially after a five-year gap. Day, for one, thinks this won’t be an issue. Sitting down with Collider, he had a little to say about this impending old-meets-new reality.
“I think with Boyega and the rest of the young cast that the studio filled out, it’s going to be interesting to follow this new young group of people. And then Burn [Gorman] and I, who are obviously back, sort of tethering things to the world of the first movie. I’m excited. I think it’s going to be fun to see monsters and robots fight each other again.”
While getting to see monsters and robots fighting other again is certainly a big draw, the introduction of new character and new jaegers is also sure to bring some excitement to the film.
In addition to Day’s confidence in his new castmates, he also spoke briefly about Newt’s new look. “Newt is back and I can tell you he looks good. He’s got all new clothes. He looks really good,” Day said.
Newt’s new duds might not be the same draw new characters and jaegers are, but it’s good to know Newt won’t just be an exact replica of the character seen in the first film.
Directed by Steven S. DeKnight, Pacific Rim: Uprising stars John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeney, Jing Tian, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, Levi Meaden, Adria Arjona, Karan Brar, and Nick E. Tarabay. The film opens in theaters on February 23, 2018.
