Charlize Theron teases a different version of Cipher for the upcoming Fast and Furious sequel, Fast X.
Way back in 2017, Charlize Theron made her debut in the Fast and Furious franchise in the series’ eighth installment, Fate of the Furious. In it, she played the film’s primary antagonist, Cipher, who was manipulating Dom to fight against his friends and family. The movie also revealed that she was the main driving force behind the events of Furious 6 and Furious 7. At the end of the film, she managed to escape the wrath of Deckard and Owen Shaw.
Charlize Theron went on to reprise the role of Cipher for Fast 9, acting in a supporting antagonist role. Once again, however, she ultimately escaped the wrath of the franchise’s heroes. She is currently set to reprise the role in the franchise’s upcoming installment, Fast X, and the character has her own spinoff in the works.
While speaking to Variety, Charlize Theron spoke about working with Jason Momoa and how Fast X‘s version of Cipher is a different person:
“It was just really nice to get to work with Jason. He was so lovely. And I get to do some different things in it, so I’m really excited about that. It’s a different Cipher.”
In that same interview, Charlize Theron joked about the Cipher spinoff, saying they needed to hurry up and make it because she needed a hip replacement:
“Listen, the man has pulled off this incredible franchise, so I wouldn’t put on anything past him. But he’s gotta hurry up because I need a hip replacement.”
Here is the synopsis for the Fast X predecessor, F9: The Fast Saga:
Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto is leading a quiet life off the grid with Letty and his son, little Brian, but they know that danger always lurks just over their peaceful horizon. This time, that threat will force Dom to confront the sins of his past if he’s going to save those he loves most. His crew joins together to stop a world-shattering plot led by the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver they’ve ever encountered: a man who also happens to be Dom’s forsaken brother, Jakob (John Cena, this year’s The Suicide Squad).
F9 sees the return of Justin Lin as director, who helmed the third, fourth, fifth and sixth chapters of the series when it transformed into a global blockbuster. The action hurtles around the globe—from London to Tokyo, from Central America to Edinburgh, and from a secret bunker in Azerbaijan to the teeming streets of Tblisi. Along the way, old friends will be resurrected, old foes will return, history will be rewritten, and the true meaning of family will be tested like never before.
Fast X is being directed by Louis Leterrier and stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, Michael Rooker, Charlize Theron, Jason Momoa, Daniela Melchior, Brie Larson, Scott Eastwood, Alan Ritchson, and Rita Moreno.
Fast X is currently set to hit theaters on May 19, 2023. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the upcoming film and Charlize Theron’s role as Cipher and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
