Chris Evans Defends Anthony Mackie As The MCU’s New Captain America

Steve Rogers himself sets the record straight!

Chris Evans defended Anthony Mackie as the MCU’s new Captain America.

One of Marvel Studios’ upcoming films will be Captain America 4. This will be the second solo series within the MCU in which a character will have a fourth solo film, following Thor: Love and Thunder. However, the difference here is that this new film will be centered on Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) rather than on Steve Rogers (Chris Evans).

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers is shown to travel back in time to live a happy life with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) in secret. An older version of the character is shown sitting on a bench, and he passes down his shield to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, trusting him with the mantle of Captain America. The journey in which we see Sam come to terms with the responsibility of the mantle is shown in the Disney Plus original MCU series, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

In a tweet thread from THR reporting on the addition of The Cloverfield Paradox director Julias Onah as the director of Captain America 4, Anthony Mackie is acknowledged to reprise his role as Sam Wilson in the upcoming MCU film, but is never explicitly acknowledged to be the new man wielding the shield, despite The Falcon and The Winter Soldier already cementing that. After THR speculated about the potential return of Chris Evans, the actor came in to further defend his former co-star as the new Cap:

Yes, Sam Wilson *is* Captain America.

Phase 4 of the MCU has been subject to some criticism amongst fans due to it feeling like there’s a lack of a concrete direction or plan that’s in motion, especially when compared to the previous three phases that led to Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. However, it’s safe to say that Phase 4 has been focusing on spotlighting certain figures such as Anthony Mackie’s Captain America to show how the universe has continued to grow after the fallout from Thanos (Josh Brolin). If Chris Evans feels the need to defend his co-star as the new Cap, it goes to show that people really need to start putting some respect on Sam Wilson’s name.

Anthony Mackie officially became the MCU’s Captain America in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Here is the synopsis:

Following the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) team up in a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience—in Marvel Studios’ “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.”

Directed by Kari Skogland from scripts written by showrunner Malcolm Spellman and Derek Kolstad, the series stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson / Falcon, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes / The Winter Soldier, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, Daniel Brühl as Baron Helmut Zemo, and Wyatt Russell as John Walker / U.S. Agent. Actors Desmond Chiam, Miki Ishikawa, Noah Mills, and Carl Lumbly are also in the cast.
