Chris McKay has confirmed that The LEGO Movie 2 is going to be a space action musical. On a recent episode of the Shanlian on Batman podcast, the director discussed the sequel to the popular The LEGO Movie, its premise, and how it was pushed back to make way for The LEGO Batman Movie.

LEGO 2 is going to be this big musical and space action movie. They need a lot of the writing, a lot of development, not only with script development, but development with songwriters. So it was very ambitious to get that movie out.”

The original release date for The LEGO Movie sequel, McKay says, was supposed to be May of this year, but it was switched out for LEGO Batman instead, and now has a release date.

Immediately following the release of the first film, McKay says that everyone was onboard to do a LEGO Movie sequel.

“The critics liked [The LEGO Movie], audiences liked it […] then we started talking about sequels and obviously everyone wanted to do LEGO 2.

The LEGO Movie sequel was initially supposed to be directed by Rob Schrab, but he exited the project due to creative differences. A couple of weeks ago, it was revealed that Trolls and Shrek Forever After director, Mike Mitchell, is set to direct the film. The first draft of the script was written by The LEGO Movie directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, with BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg set to rewrite the original script.
