"The most important man who ever lived."

The first teaser trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has been released online, showing Cillian Murphy as the father of the atomic bomb.

The teaser features a clock counting down to Oppenheimer‘s release next year. It is only available to watch via a live loop on Twitter, with the countdown appearing over the clips actually displaying the exact amount of time until the film’s release.

While the teaser reveals little of the film, pairing clips of Cillian Murphy’s J. Robert Oppenheimer and footage of fireballs with voiceover from other members of the film’s cast, it sets an ominous tone for the story of the man who made the atomic bomb.

Christopher Nolan Promises ‘The World Forever Changes’

The first teaser for Oppenheimer can be viewed on the film’s official Twitter page, offering a first look at Cillian Murphy in action as the infamous physicist.

Christopher Nolan is known for scale and the first teaser trailer for Oppenheimer reminds audiences that, like much of the director’s recent work, the film has been shot on IMAX cameras. Most of the footage shown – excluding the slow-motion fireballs – is in black and white. It looks likely the film will be presented in this way, using color selectively.

Oppenheimer boasts a stellar all-star cast. Cillian Murphy is joined by Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh and Gary Oldman amongst others. It is not clear whose voices can be heard in the trailer, though the final line – “The man who moved the Earth” – sounds like it could be from Downey Jr.’s Lewis Strauss.

Oppenheimer‘s full cast includes Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, Matt Damon as Leslie Groves Jr., Emily Blunt as Kitty Oppenheimer, Florence Pugh, Gary Oldman, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Alden Ehrenreich, David Krumholtz, Kenneth Branagh, Jason Clarke, Josh Peck, and Matthias Schweighofer.
