It’s official: Colin Farrell will reprise his role as The Penguin in the upcoming sequel to The Batman. Director Matt Reeves, who helmed the first film and is also involved in writing and directing the sequel, announced the news during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

At the panel, Reeves revealed that The Batman 2 is scheduled to begin filming in early 2025, with Farrell’s portrayal of The Penguin in the Max series setting the stage for his return in the movie. Farrell’s critically acclaimed performance in the first film has set high expectations for his character’s return.

A new trailer for The Penguin also premiered at San Diego Comic-Con, offering fans a glimpse of the series set to debut on Max on September 19. Robert Pattinson is rumored to reprise his role as Batman for the eight-episode series, but his involvement remains unconfirmed.

Who else is attached to The Penguin series?

Mare Of Easttown helmer Craig Zobel is directing the first two episodes of The Penguin, with Lauren LeFranc (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Chuck) overseeing the project as its writer and showrunner. Colin Farrell is an executive producer on the series alongside The Batman director Matt Reeves and producer Dylan Clark.

Colin Farrell leads the cast of the HBO series as Oswald “Oz” Cobb, better known as The Penguin. He’s joined by Cristin Milioti, who portrays Sofia Falcone, the daughter of the late Carmine Falcone. The recurring cast features Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni, Michael Zegen as Alberto Falcone, and Michael Kelly as Johnny Vitti. Additional actors include Rhenzy Feliz, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, James Madio, Scott Cohen, Theo Rossi, Carmen Ejogo, François Chau, David H. Holmes, Craig Walker and Jared Abrahamson.

The Batman opened in theaters in March 2022, earning 770.8 million at the worldwide box office, a figure that makes it the seventh highest-grossing movie of 2022. Reeves is working on a sequel to the Warner Bros. project and currently writing its script alongside Mattson Tomlin.
