After his uncredited work on The Batman, screenwriter Mattson Tomlin is officially joining Matt Reeves as co-writer on the DC movie’s sequel.
Matt Reeves has a long future ahead of him in the world of The Batman. The director has recently been given a multi-year film deal at Warner Bros. Discovery, at the heart of which is his ongoing work on the Batman franchise. As well as spin-off series for HBO Max, Reeves is currently working on a sequel to the film.
Mattson Tomlin, who did some work on the first film’s script in the development stage, will have a larger role on the sequel, serving as a co-writer alongside Reeves.
The Batman Sequel Lands Its Writing Team
Mattson Tomlin was brought onto The Batman when the film was running into issues in its third act, however, the screenwriter did not receive a credit for his contributions to the script.
On the first film, Matt Reeves shared a writing credit with fellow screenwriter Peter Craig. For the sequel, Mattson Tomlin will be involved from the outset in a more substantial writing role. Plot details are currently unknown, with writing set to begin in the coming weeks.
Mattson Tomlin’s previous credits include Project Power, which starred Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and his 2021 directorial debut Mother/Android with Chloe Grace Moretz, on which Matt Reeves was a producer.
Tomlin has also previously worked on other Batman stories, having written Batman: The Imposter, a comic mini-series for DC.
Here is the synopsis for Matt Reeves’ The Batman:
“Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.
When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.”
Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the titular hero, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as the Penguin and Barry Keoghan as The Joker.
The Batman is streaming exclusively on HBO Max and is available to own on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the sequel to The Batman, and subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
