Warner Bros. will receive tax credits for Joker: Folie á Deux‘s film shoot in Los Angeles.
The first Joker film was a groundbreaking comic book movie and resulted in several Oscar wins. One aspect of Joker that separated it from the rest of the crowded comic book movie landscape was its grittiness, with New York City posing as Gotham City playing a major role in delivering the darker tone.
The Joker Is Heading To LA
On Monday, the California Film Commission revealed that Joker: Folie á Deux will film in Los Angeles, with principal photography expected to begin in December. It’s unclear if Los Angeles will pose as Gotham City this time. However, it wouldn’t be the first time Los Angeles transformed into Gotham City since it was done for Birds of Prey.
Joker: Folie á Deux is rumored to take place in Arkham Asylum, so Gotham City might not be as heavily featured as it was in the first film. Warner Bros. will receive $12.6 million in tax credits for the sequel’s principal photography in Los Angeles.
Here is the official synopsis for Joker:
“Director Todd Phillips’ “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.”
Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
Joker: Folie á Deux hits theaters on October 4, 2024. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming sequel, and subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
