‘Creature Commandos’ Star David Harbour On Potential Live-Action Debut As Frankenstein

Is Frankenstein coming to live-action?

Could Frankenstein be breaking from the shackles of animation? David Harbour gives his thoughts on reprising his Creature Commandos role in a live-action DC Universe project.

Creature Commandos is already shaping up to be a nexus point in the new DC Universe. The animated series is set to feature a number of live-action actors making their jump to animation, such as Steve Agee’s John Economos and Sean Gunn’s Weasel, along with debuting animated characters to jump into live-action, such as Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. Though, according to actor David Harbour, he isn’t sure his character Frankenstein will be getting the same treatment.

“I don’t know if I’m waiting for the phone call,” Harbour told ComicBook.com. “I mean, I’m not like down by the phone, but no, there’s nothing specific yet or at least I haven’t heard anything specific…I think Frank [Grillo’s] already moved into Peacemaker.”

“I have a feeling it probably will come up. The project’s really good. We’ll talk about it at New York Comic Con, but it’s like it’s it’s very special, very funny. All those all those characters, Dr. Phosphorus and the Bride…I can’t imagine they wouldn’t want to do it live action, but we’ll have to see. That’s all in the mind of the wacky, brilliant James Gunn.”

It makes sense that there haven’t been any concrete discussions about bringing David Harbour’s Frankenstein into live-action. When Creature Commandos first entered development, James Gunn didn’t even know he was going to be co-chair of the entire DC Universe. Things have been shockingly moving fast. Yet Harbour does still have some thoughts if he does get the call.

How David Harbour Wants Frankenstein To Come To Live-Action

Much ink has been spilled in the argument of CGI versus practical makeup for comic book characters. When asked if he’d dread putting on the effects required to transform into his Creature Commandos character, David Harbour admitted that he thinks Frankenstein would likely be CGI, even if he’d love to do it the practical way.

“Yeah, because I wonder what it would be. I’m…yeah, I’m not thrilled about that. I think they might do…if they did it. I think they might do the CGI thing that they did with Taika [Waititi] in Thor: Ragnarok. I feel like there’s probably a universe of that nowadays. I feel like the practical stuff, although I love it, is really falling a bit by the wayside.”

Making Frankenstein live-action wouldn’t be the first time David Harbour had to put on layers of latex for a role. Just look at his 2019 Hellboy reboot (or, actually, maybe look away). Yet with the DC Universe’s New York Comic-Con panel just a few weeks away, it’s likely fans will find out the fate of the Creature Commandos sooner rather than later.

Creature Commandos is scheduled to premiere on Max in December. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe.
