Daniel Radcliffe Isn’t Interested In Returning To ‘Harry Potter’ Role

It's not the answer many wanted to hear.

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has stated that he isn’t interested in returning to the role for a Cursed Child adaptation at the moment.

Back in 2016, J.K. Rowling alongside playwrights Jack Thorne and John Tiffany wrote the only official sequel to the original Harry Potter run, in the form of a play. The play, titled Harry Potter And The Cursed Child was a big hit and many have wondered if a feature film adaptation is on the table. However, if one is to be made, franchise star Daniel Radcliffe isn’t interested in appearing in it at this moment.

Daniel Radcliffe wasn’t even out of elementary school when he was cast in the role of Harry Potter. For over ten years, the actor worked on the various films in the franchise before it concluded with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two in 2011. Since then, the Harry Potter brand has soured significantly in many people’s eyes, thanks in no small part to creator J.K. Rowling’s transphobic views and the inconsistent quality of the Fantastic Beasts films. This, however, doesn’t really factor into Radcliffe wanting to stay away from the franchise.

While speaking to The New York Times, Daniel Radcliffe opened up about the possibility of returning to the series for a Cursed Child adaptation. He definitively said that he wasn’t interested in doing it at this time, citing the amount of time he spent on the franchise but wouldn’t rule it out altogether:

“This isn’t the answer that anybody’s going to want, but I think I was so able to go back and enjoy it because it’s not a part of my day-to-day life anymore. I’m getting to a point where I feel like I made it out of “Potter” OK and I’m really happy with where I am now, and to go back would be such a massive change to my life. I’m never going to say never, but the “Star Wars” guys had like 30, 40 years before they went back. For me, it’s only been 10. It’s not something I’m really interested in doing right now.”

Here is the synopsis for the latest film in the franchise, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore:

Professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) knows the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) is moving to seize control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to lead an intrepid team of wizards, witches and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers. But with the stakes so high, how long can Dumbledore remain on the sidelines?

Directed by David Yates from a screenplay written by J.K. Rowling and Steve Kloves, the film stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Callum Turner, William Nadylam, Poppy Corby-Tuech, Jessica Williams, Jude Law, and Mads Mikkelsen.

The new Fantastic Beasts film will hit theaters on April 15, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the franchise and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
