Did Daredevil: Born Again truly need to be remade from the ground up? The showrunner reveals we he made such drastic changes to the original vision.
Daredevil: Born Again was, and still is, one of the most highly anticipated projects to come out of the MCU’s multiverse saga. The show is series is set to be a revival of one of the greatest series to ever come out of the Marvel brand. However, fans began to worry about the quality of the project when some key details started to leak. Namely, that key characters Foggy Nelson and Karen Page would be absent from the revival.
These worries reached a head when it was announced that Daredevil: Born Again would be undergoing a complete creative overhaul, with the original showrunners being ousted in favor for The Punisher alum Dario Scardapane. Speaking candidly about the restructuring for the first time, the showrunner reveals that the series simply lost some of its core drivers in its first attempt at bringing the beloved character into the MCU.
“It was much less the world we knew, and more trying to blaze a new trail,” Scardapane explained to Empire in a recent talk. “but in doing so, they’d forgotten some things that really were necessary to the engine of the story.”
Why Foggy & Karen Return In Daredevi: Born Again
One of these core elements, according to both fans and Dario Scardapane, was Karen Page and Foggy Nelson. When discussing his first meetings for being brought on as the showrunner for Daredevil: Born Again, Scardapane reveals that their return as one of the first things he brought up to the MCU executives. And it seems he put everything on the line for the Avocados at Law.
“That was actually one of the first things I said to the bosses. You can’t do this show without Karen and Foggy. They’re Matt’s family. They’re the heart of his world. You can’t take them out without explaining why, and if that explanation doesn’t ring true, don’t take them out.”
“I was willing to lose a job over this one,” He continued later in the interview. “Because Season 3 of the Netflix show ended with a dream, with the names on that napkin. If you don’t pay that off, you’re not giving your characters context. You can’t ignore that dream.”
It certainly is hard to imagine Matt Murdock joining the MCU properly in Daredevil: Born Again without Karen Page and Foggy Nelson making an appearance. While some fans still aren’t sold on Dario Scardapane’s role as showrunner, decisions like this are certainly causing people to regain a bit of hope that the Disney Plus series will manage to recapture the magic of the original Netflix show.
