Is Daredevil: Born Again fixing its past? The project’s showrunner reveals how the upcoming revival series differs from its Netflix roots.
When it was announced that The Punisher alum Dario Scardapane would be brought on as showrunner for Daredevil: Born Again following the series undergoing a creative overhaul, the fandom was filled with a sense of hope. There was an air of worry that Disney was going to sanitize the character for the MCU. Yet bringing back a creative from the Netflix regime suggests the show may maintain its tone on the new service.
However, it seems that not everything will carry over from the Netflix incarnation. When speaking on the upcoming series, Dario Scardapane revealed that Daredevil: Born Again will have relatively less “grousing” than the original series. Instead, the project is set to focus more on the action scenes instead of having its characters talk for multiple pages between them.
“There is more fun in the moments with these characters and a lot less navel-gazing than before,” Scardapane explained to SFX Magazine. “The earlier show, at its best, was fantastic. At its worst, it was two characters in a room talking about what a hero is. I felt that had been done. I’m not taking swipes. I just didn’t want to hear characters grousing about their lot in life. I wanted to see them doing things.”
“One of our edicts [on The Punisher] was longer scenes. You had these long five-page scenes of characters hashing it out in order to make space between these massive action sequences. The way stuff has evolved since then, we’re able to do big action sequences at a lot more pace.”
Daredevil: Born Again’s New Tone
This may come as a disappointment to longtime fans, many of whom consider the “navel-gazing” as some of the best parts of the original Netflix show. However, this change didn’t come without reason. When continuing to speak on the series, Dario Scardapane revealed that Daredevil: Born Again is diverging from the noir aesthetic of the original show to go much darker.
“I really feel that Netflix’s Daredevil, which I know in my blood, was much more noir, and this show is more New York crime story. It has elements of The Sopranos and King Of New York. There’s a feeling for those classic ’90s crime tales.”
“[Daredevil: Born Again] has a pace and a scope that, for a lot of reasons, Netflix wasn’t able to do. They were very dark, cinematically, not necessarily story-wise, although there were some dark elements. We’re much darker.”
It’s interesting to hear that Dario Scardapane wants to evolve the series with Daredevil: Born Again. Many fans expect the Disney Plus revival to fall in lockstep with the original series. However, given how many years it has been since the Netflix incarnation, it may be time for a change of pace to get new fans into the project.
