‘Daredevil’: Jeph Loeb Cut Nobu’s Original Arc, Says Actor Peter Shinkoda

The actor states that Jeph Loeb made anti-Asian comments when it came to Nobu's arc.

Daredevil actor Peter Shinkoda has said that former Marvel Head of Television Jeph Loeb cut Nobu’s original story arc.

Peter Shinkoda may have just dropped a bombshell regarding Marvel’s Daredevil series. Starring as Nobu in Daredevil, one of Marvel’s gritty shows on Netflix, Shinkoda was a fan-favorite. While his character was well received, fans were confused as to why he didn’t receive as much depth as some of the other characters. Shinkoda revealed that this was the case because of Jeph Loeb’s anti-Asian sentiments.

During the #SaveDaredevilCon hangout session, Peter Shinkoda revealed that the writers originally had big plans for his character Nobu and Madame Gao. However, Jeph Loeb stepped in and ensured that the Daredevil writers wouldn’t write anything that was more than necessary.

“I’m not into really protecting, you know, certain things anymore but Jeph Loeb told the writers room not to write for Nobu and Gao and this was reiterated many times by many of the writers and showrunners. He said, ‘Nobody cares about Chinese people and Asian people. There were three previous Marvel movies, a trilogy called Blade that was made where Wesley Snipes killed 200 Asians each movie. Nobody gives a shit so don’t write about Nobu and Gao.’ And they were forced to put their storyline down and drop it.”

The original story arc for Nobu would have seen the character trying to get a transplant. He would have also forged documents to get into the country, which would have then seen him carrying out his Black Sky plans. Peter Shinkoda did confirm that the writers on Daredevil were quite apologetic. Still, it is disappointing that Nobu and Gao’s original story arcs weren’t able to see the light of day due to Jeph Loeb’s views.
