Was Daredevil season 4 and 5 going to be peak? The former showrunner for the Netflix incarnation of the show reveals their scrapped plans for the series.

While Daredevil is officially back with Born Again, it’s hard to forget the insane past few years the character has been through. The series was at the top of its game back in 2018, pumping out quality that Netflix hadn’t seen since the first season. Things were looking bright for the Avocados at Law heading into season 4, with planning even started on season 5…only for the plug to be pulled on Marvel’s collaborations with the streamer, leading to all the shows being abruptly cancelled.

It was a confluence of factors that even shocked showrunner Erik Oleson. Sitting down with TheWrap to reflect on his journey with Daredevil, Oleson explained that TV writers always need to be prepared for a series to be cancelled. However, the fact that Marvel’s entire branch with Netflix was shut down seemingly overnight during planning for season 4 and 5 was an odd experience, to say the least.

“I’m very excited that the show came back at a different network. It’s so weird. As a showrunner, you’re kind of prepared for your show to be canceled. You’re not necessarily prepared for your studio [to be canceled]. It was a very bizarre thing.”

Scrapped Plans For Daredevil Season 4

One of the biggest lingering questions with fans ever since Daredevil‘s plug got pulled at Netflix were what plans were in store for season 4. It was an open secret that planning for the show’s continuation was ongoing before being scrapped. Showrunner Erik Oleson revealed, not only did they have a new direction for season 4, but that they were already mapping out season 5 and beyond. These plans would have featured familiar faces like Bullseye, but also brand new ones.

“The Season 4 I had planned was quite different. It was a Typhoid Mary story. It was going to go into a different direction. And then I was going to circle back to the Bullseye storyline in Season 5. I was starting to plan out future seasons and what we would do, kind of a long arc. And then, of course, Netflix and Marvel broke up because Disney+ wanted Marvel.”

These ideas for a scrapped season 4 and 5 of the Netflix series is enough to make any Daredevil fan salivate. How would Matt deal with Typhoid Mary, a mutant capable of pyrokinesis and mind control? What would Bullseye be doing in the years-long gap? They’re questions that might never be answered. However, at least this information gives fans some closure on what could have been.
