The more things change, the even more they stay the same. David Ayer has once more put out a call for DC Studios and Warner Bros. Discovery to put out “The Ayer Cut” of 2016’s Suicide Squad.
Perhaps even more so than Zack Snyder’s own films, David Ayer’s Suicide Squad was a victim of endless corporate meddling from Warner Brothers, resulting in a final product that barely even resembled the original project he set out to make. While there was little hope at the time, the release of the Snyder Cut has inspired Ayer to call for the release of “The Ayer Cut” by DC Studios:
In truth, now is the perfect time for Warner Bros. and DC Studios to “release the Ayer Cut.” DC Studios currently has no films slated for 2024 ahead of its large-scale reboot, and the blockbuster landscape next summer is almost entirely barren due to the strikes. It’s possible the release of a new Suicide Squad entirely different from the first cut of the film could be exactly the juice the company needs to keep going.
Is A David Ayer cut of Suicide Squad coming?
David Ayer’s journey with Suicide Squad has been a topic of discussion for a while now, primarily due to the perceived chasm between his original intentions and the end product that hit theaters. Through various interactions, Ayer has voiced his disappointment and frustrations regarding the radical shifts in the movie’s narrative and tone, influenced by studio decisions.
It’s currently unknown when or if the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad will be released. If it does, it will likely be categorized under the “Elseworlds” banner of films, which includes any projects not canon to the main DC Universe being constructed by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Current projects in this category include Joker: Folie à Deux and The Batman: Part II.
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, television, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
