Superman has a long road ahead in the DC Universe! David Corenswet and James Gunn reveal new details about the character’s arc in the highly-anticipated film.
It has been just over a year since James Gunn started rolling cameras on the first movie in his DC Universe reboot: Superman. The journey has been just as exhilarating for fans as it has been for those behind the camera, with the internet able to follow every step of development thanks to the power of social media. Though despite the fandom having been following David Corenswet’s odyssey as the hero since the days his casting was just a rumor, they don’t actually know too much about what he’ll be going through in the upcoming film.
The first peek behind the curtains fans have gotten in a while actually came from a TIME Magazine profile on David Corenswet. The article was meant to introduce fans to the actor as the new Superman, with a few new quotes from the star and director James Gunn. In doing so, fans got brand new details about the production of the DC Universe film, which included unique insights into the mindset of the film’s key creatives.
“Compared to Batman and Spider-Man, he isn’t depicted as having great inner turmoil. If he’s invincible, what’s at stake?” Corenswet posited. “All the important stuff. You can be the most well-adjusted, well-intentioned person, but people will still die. You can’t save everyone forever.”
Is David Corenswet Good As Superman?
That quote alone is likely enough to get any true DC Universe fan to perk their ears up. Understanding that the core of Superman is a good man fighting against an often cruel world is paramount to adapting the character, and it seems as though David Corenswet has that understanding in spades. However, that doesn’t mean the film is without conflict. James Gunn would go on to tease the literal journey the hero will be going through in the film, which includes internal conflict about his stalwart values.
“He is starting to become successful (at both jobs) in the big glitzy city so far away from home. He’s madly in love with a woman who isn’t so sure about him. And he’s made a few superhuman friends who like him but think of him as naive. All these new elements in his life have unbalanced him a bit and as he’s tottering we’re going to see where he lands in terms of his values and choices.”
From all this, it seems as though Superman is going to be a true test of the character’s morality. The DC Universe will be throwing uncertainty and doubt at his convictions, and he’ll have to learn how to adapt to a world where a heart of gold can’t always save the day. Even though these aren’t the most juicy details, it should give fans hope that James Gunn and David Corenswet have a tight handle on the beloved character.
Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
