Stranger Things star David Harbour has revealed that he always knew his character, Hopper, would return for the fourth season of the hit Netflix series.
Stranger Things’ third season ended on something of a downer note. After a long battle with the Russians who secretly owned Starcourt Mall and the Mind Flayer, David Harbour’s character, Chief Hooper was apparently killed an explosion. However, the whole scene was shot and edited in a way that is was left open for interpretation as to whether or not Hooper was actually killed in the season finale, with the final scene suggesting that he had been captured by the Russians and sent to some kind of Gulag.
The first trailer for the fourth season of Stranger Things ultimately confirmed that David Harbour’s character had in fact survived the events of the third season and was indeed in Russia. While speaking to Total Film, David Harbour revealed that he and everyone knew that the character had survived and would be back for the fourth season:
“I knew. We knew. We had talked about it. I just wanted to preserve the fantasy for everyone. And it’s such a weird position that we’re in now with so much media, that everybody wants to talk to you about it.
I’m very close to the Duffer brothers, and I know where the story’s going, and I’ve known from the get-go. And I think that’s been the great thing about this story. In terms of Stranger Things, you’ll be able to look back at Season One and see a lot of things that happen further down the line that relate to that.”
