It seems that while Jason Momoa’s time as Aquaman may be done, his time in the DC Universe is far from over. During a recent interview, DC Studios co-chair Peter Safran assured fans that Momoa will always have a home in the DCU.
Given the lackluster performance of Jason Momoa’s recent Aquaman sequel at the tail end of the dying DC Universe, it’s not likely the actor will return as the Defender of the Deep. However, he may not need to for fans to see him continue working at DC Studios. According to Peter Safran, co-chair of DC Studios with James Gunn, Momoa will always be welcome at Warner Bros. even if the movie flops:
“We’ll see what happens with him beyond [Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom.]” Peter Safran told The Hollywood Reporter. “I know that Jason [Momoa] will always have a home at DC, and at Warner Bros. In fact, his next movie is Minecraft.”
This comment by Peter Safran all but confirms Jason Momoa will return to DC Studios for a new role. It’s been rumored for months that the actor would be portraying Lobo in the new DC Universe, so the failure of the recent Aquaman sequel likely means little for his future. Here’s just to hoping the universe doesn’t get rebooted a third time!
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, all four projects struggling at the box office. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
