Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld says Josh Brolin is still interested in continuing to play the role of Cable.
Josh Brolin is one of the most storied actors in comic book movie history as the star has played two Marvel roles — Cable and Thanos. Josh Brolin’s tenure as Thanos came to a ceremonious end in last year’s Avengers: Endgame, which saw the famed Titan perish at the hands of Iron Man. Now that he’s done playing a psychopathic, intergalactic murderer, Rob Liefeld says Josh Brolin wants to star alongside Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool once again as the time-traveling Cable.
Speaking with ComicBook.com, prolific Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld revealed that Josh Brolin told him that he still wants to play Cable.
“I’m going to tell your viewers…Josh wants to be Cable again sooner than later. He is itching to be Cable again. He loved being Cable. He told me he understands how beloved his role as Thanos is, but he doesn’t look completely like Josh Brolin.”
“These are Josh Brolin’s own words telling me, Rob Liefeld. He told me, ‘Rob when I appeared as Cable in Deadpool 2, my phones rang off the hook.’ It changed everything for him and obviously Josh is gonna get some career lifetime achievement award at some point. The guy is just one of our greatest actors.”
It would be surprising is Josh Brolin didn’t return to the role of Cable as his character was quite beloved by fans and critics in Deadpool 2. In addition to the film’s critical and commercial success, the sequel left the door open for Josh Brolin to return to the role, so it’s almost a no-brainer that Cable is on the table for a third film in the Deadpool franchise.
Rob Liefeld seems quite excited for what’s next with the Deadpool franchise and his admiration for Josh Brolin’s take on Cable is awesome. Rob Liefeld is also responsible for co-creating Cable, so his stamp of approval on the star’s portrayal is great to hear. As for the Deadpool franchise, a third film is currently in the works and may be integrated within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Josh Brolin hopefully returning.
