Social media has been abuzz with claims that Star Wars is finally dead on Disney Plus with the premiere of Ahsoka. However, it seems as though Disney thinks it’s doing better than ever!
The controversy around Ahsoka‘s viewership started when Samba TV, a third-party monitoring service for streaming viewership, released a statement saying that 1.2 million US Households tuned in to the series premiere, putting it below even the third season of The Mandalorian. This caused an outcry on social media that the first female-led Star Wars series finally killed the franchise, leading to Disney putting out their own figure that 14 million households watched the premiere on Disney Plus, making it the most watched title in the past week.
While it’s certainly possible that Disney is bolstering their numbers, even the 1.2 million figure from Samba TV is shockingly good. It puts Ahsoka on par with other Star Wars projects like Andor despite not having the backing of a critically acclaimed film like the latter. It’s also only the domestic number, with there certainly being millions to tune in overseas. It seems as though Star Wars projects on Disney Plus are stronger than ever!
The creative team cast of Ahsoka
The Ahsoka Tano series is being developed by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. The latter co-created Ahsoka alongside George Lucas, with the heroine making her first appearance in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
