Don Cheadle is just as surprised as the fans! The Iron Man actor gives his thoughts on Robert Downey Jr. making his grand return to the MCU as Doctor Doom.
The reveal that Robert Downey Jr. would be playing Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday rocked the internet. It even came as a surprise to fellow MCU alums like Jeremy Renner. That also seems to be true for Don Cheadle, who shared the screen with Downey during the actor’s tenure as Iron Man, revealing that he had no clue it was happening, and still has no idea what’s going on!
“I was like, ‘What the f*ck?'” Cheadle told Collider in a recent talk. “Everything is clay right now. They’re rewriting, they’re reworking, and so I honestly can’t even tease anything.”
It makes sense that Marvel would want to keep Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU wrapped up tight, especially given how prevalent leaks have gotten on their recent projects. And given his take on Doctor Doom is likely to be completely divorced from his time as Iron Man, it’s not likely the studio would have to fold Don Cheadle in on their plans for Avengers: Doomsday.
Will Don Cheadle Return For Avengers: Doomsday?
While it’s been made clear that Robert Downey Jr. is coming back in a big way as Doctor Doom, the fate of other MCU stars in Avengers: Doomsday is a bit more up in the air. When his Iron Man co-star Don Cheadle was asked about his potential return in the crossover film, the actor admitted that he can’t tell much to reporters at this point in the process, even throwing in a quick joke about the directors of the upcoming film.
“I’ve heard of a Russo Brother. There are two?” Cheadle joked with Collider. “You know I can’t talk about that stuff.”
While it’s likely Don Cheadle’s deal with Marvel to return in Avengers: Doomsday is still in flux, it’s more likely than not that the actor will be reuniting with Robert Downey Jr. on the silver screen. Maybe he’ll even don the Iron Man armor himself to take on Doctor Doom in the film’s climax, given the character’s history in comics. Since nothing is set in stone, it’s the perfect time for speculation.
