Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke recently spoke about the fate of her character Daenerys Targareon, sharing what she would have liked to see for her and Kit Harington’s Jon Snow.
The final season of Game of Thrones generally failed to impress fans, however one point that proved divisive was Daenerys Targaryen’s violent turn as she conquered King’s Landing and massacred its people. While some felt this was too sudden a change of character for Daenerys, others have pointed out the signs of her tyrannical nature were there all along.
Actress Emilia Clarke apparently wanted a brighter ending for the Mother of Dragons – one that may have included a future with her lover, Kit Harington’s Jon Snow.
Emilia Clarke’s Hopes For Daenerys & Jon Snow
During an appearance at DIF London, Emilia Clarke spoke about her character’s fate in the Game of Thrones finale, revealing how she would have liked to see things end.
Clarke claimed she still believes Daenerys Targaryen “did nothing wrong,” which may be a controversial opinion of a character who unleashed her dragon’s fiery wrath upon the people of King’s Landing after the capital had surrendered to her.
Talking about where the finale left Daenerys and Jon Snow, Emilia Clarke revealed her preferred ending, saying:
“I still think Daenerys did nothing wrong. It’s not fair that Jon gets to live. I want Daenerys with him. With Jon. They could go to family therapy and fix their issues. Daenerys is a very hopeful character, she has a lot of hopes, and I wished that she was able to achieve that.”
Considering Daenerys’ hopes included conquering the Seven Kingdoms, something she dubiously attempted to paint as a quest to deliver liberty, maybe it’s for the best Jon Snow decided to cut her reign short.
Kit Harington’s Jon Snow is set to return to screens in a planned Game of Thrones spin-off following the character. Emilia Clarke responded “Never say never” when asked about a potential return in the spin-off. The Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon, currently airing on HBO, explores the history of Daenerys Targaryen’s ancestors.
Here is the synopsis for House of the Dragon:
Based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, the series will tell the story of House Targaryen (a.k.a. the House that gave us the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen) and take place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan J. Condal serve as co-showrunners on House of the Dragon and are executive producing alongside George R. R. Martin. The series features a star-studded cast that includes Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Paddy Considine, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, and Sonoya Mizuno.
