Emily Watson and Shirley Henderson are set to spearhead the cast of the upcoming Dune prequel series from HBO Max and Legendary Television.
The casting process for Dune: The Sisterhood has officially begun as Emily Watson and Shirley Henderson have boarded the HBO Max series as Valya Harkonnen and Tula Harkonnen, the two women behind the Bene Gesserit. The series, which is based on the 2012 novel Sisterhood of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, takes place thousands of years before the events of Frank Herbert’s main Dune storyline with Paul Atreides.
The creative team behind Dune: The Sisterhood
Diane Ademu-John is credited as the creator, writer, co-showrunner and executive producer of Dune: The Sisterhood while Alison Schapker serves as co-showrunner and executive producer. Johan Renck, one of the directors behind the critically-acclaimed HBO series Chernobyl, is directing the pilot.
Denis Villeneuve, Jon Spaihts, Scott Z. Burns, Matthew King, John Cameron, Cait Collins and Brian Herbert are executive producers on Dune: The Sisterhood. Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert are also on board as executive producers, overseeing the project for the Frank Herbert estate. Author Kevin J. Anderson is a co-producer.
Directed by Denis Villeneuve from a script he co-wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts, Dune opened in theaters in October 2021. The film earned at $401.8 million at the worldwide box office before going on to earn winning six Oscars at the 94th Academy Awards. The television prequel was officially greenlit a few weeks after the ceremony.

Set in the distant future, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, control of Arrakis is highly contested among the noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s control of Arrakis.
Dune stars Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem and David Dastmalchian.
