Ethan Hawke compared Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight performance to Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man.
Marvel Studios’ newest original Disney Plus series Moon Knight is set to premiere next month. The series features Oscar Isaac in the titular role as well as Ethan Hawke as his primary antagonist. With the series shaping up to be perhaps the most unique new original series thus far for the MCU, it’s also shaping up to be quite an exciting performance from an acclaimed actor like Oscar Isaac, whom Ethan Hawke compared favorably to the MCU’s first superhero: Robert Downey Jr.
Robert Downey Jr’s portrayal as Tony Stark AKA Iron Man has been widely regarded as one of the best casting decisions in all of comic book movies. His performance has also received universal acclaim, particularly in his final outing in Avengers: Endgame. With a complex character like Moon Knight, Oscar Isaac has a lot to live up to, and he opened up about the risks to Empire Magazine:
“It is risky. He’s an obscure hero, and the things we’re dealing with are very different. But because it’s a limited series, rather than a movie, the pressure isn’t there to make sure the opening weekend is massive. We’re able to take more risks, to bring that experimental quality on a huge scale.”
Ethan Hawke had nothing but high praise for Oscar Isaac, hyping up his performance favorably above even the titan that is Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man:
“It’s an electrifying performance. Robert Downey [Jr] has got a run for his money…”
Both Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke receive regular acclaim for their work. The fact that we have two of the best actors working today involved with Marvel Studios’ newest series is exciting, and although it is expected to hear actors praise their co-stars to promote their upcoming projects, the kind of character that Moon Knight is requires an actor of great skill, and to hear Ethan Hawke compare Oscar Isaac to Robert Downey Jr. is such an intriguing sign.
Here is the official synopsis for Marvel’s Moon Knight series:
The series follows Steven Grant, a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, who becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life. Steven discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc’s enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while thrust into a deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt.
Starring Oscar Isaac, Ethan Hawke, Gaspard Ulliel, and May Calamawy, Moon Knight is set to make its Disney Plus debut on March 30th.
