Fantastic Four director Josh Trank has revealed that he wanted to have a black actress play Sue Storm in his film but Fox demanded a famous white actress take on the role instead.
Trank recently opened up to Geeks of Color regarding his creative battle with 20th Century Fox over his Fantastic Four film. The director revealed that his first conflict with the studio occurred when he was met with pushback over his desire to cast a black actress as Sue Storm as the studio wanted a famous white actress to play the Invisible Woman. The role ultimately went to Kate Mara and featured an adoption plot to explain the film’s multiracial family, as Michael B. Jordan and Reg E. Cathey took on the roles of Johnny Storm and Franklin Storm respectively.
“There was a lot of controversial conversations that were had behind the scenes on that. I was mostly interested in a black Sue Storm and a black Johnny Storm and a black Franklin Storm. But I also, when you’re dealing with a studio on a massive movie like that, everybody wants to keep an open mind to who the big stars are gonna be. Like, ‘Well maybe it will be Margot Robbie or something like that.’ But when it came down to it, I found a lot of pretty heavy pushback on casting a black woman in that role.”
The director went on to express his regret over not dropping out of the project as the conflict clashed with his own values directly:
“When I look back on that, I should have just walked when that sort of realization hit me and I feel embarrassed about that, that I didn’t, just out of principle, because those aren’t the values that I stand for in my own life and those weren’t the values then, or ever, for me. Because I’m somebody who always talks about standing up for what I believe in, even if it means burning my career up, and I feel bad that I didn’t take it to the mat with that issue. I felt like I failed in that regard, but that was a weird, unfortunate situation, I don’t know how else to put it.”
Trank has been opening up about his infamous battle with Fox over Fantastic Four lately while promoting his new film Capone. The director recently expressed his regret for tweeting out his frustration over his vision for the project not coming to fruition. Despite the project being ripped from his hands, Trank has said there isn’t a need for his cut of the film to ever be released to the public.
