The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola has shared his thoughts on Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool.
Francis Ford Coppola is one of the most iconic directors in the western world, having directed classics like Apocalypse Now, The Conversation, and The Godfather trilogy. A mentor to George Lucas and a colleague to Steven Spielberg, Coppola remains one of Hollywood’s biggest heavyweights whose work continues to influence artists. The director has also been no stranger to criticizing modern blockbuster machines.
Shawn Levy Directing Ryan Reynolds’ ‘Deadpool 3’ For Marvel Studios
Like Martin Scorsese, The Godfather director has expressed his issues with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which, over the last decade, has been the dominant form of mainstream entertainment. That doesn’t mean there aren’t some diamonds in the rough, as Francis Ford Coppola recently told Variety that he enjoyed Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool.
Yup. The man behind The Godfather has no bone to pick with Ryan Reynolds’ Merc With a Mouth.
“I liked ‘Deadpool,’ I thought that was amazing.”
In 2019, after comic book fan loyalists lit their pitchforks to go after Martin Scorsese’s “theme parks” comments, Francis Ford Coppola sided with the director. “When Martin Scorsese says that the Marvel pictures are not cinema, he’s right because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration,” the director relayed to a crowd in Lyon, France whilst accepting the Prix Lumiere. “I don’t know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again. Martin was kind when he said it’s not cinema. He didn’t say it’s despicable, which I just say it is.”
“Despicable.” Harsh words from Francis Ford Coppola. Well, the director has earned the right to say whatever he’d like because of his contributions to cinema but it’ll always be hilarious how, out of all the films Marvel has produced, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool is the one he deems as “amazing.”
Directed by David Leitch from a script written by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick & Ryan Reynolds, the film stars Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Julian Dennison, Zazie Beetz, T.J. Miller, Brianna Hildebrand, and Jack Kesy.
