Frank Grillo wants to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a Crossbones series.
One of the most popular characters that Marvel Studios has brought to the big screen has to be Frank Grillo’s Crossbones. Despite barely being in the franchise, Grillo’s character has gained a prolific following from fans all around the world. Grillo appeared as the villain Crossbones in three films — Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame. In a recent interview with Forbes, Grillo discussed a number of things, including how he’d love to revisit the character in an Marvel series, while also touching upon his short screen time in the series and how Marvel failed to capitalize on the character’s popularity.
“I would love to do that just because I have never seen a character be on the screen so little and yet have such a fan following, I scratch my head with it sometimes. I have a great relationship with Marvel and the guys there, but why didn’t they, even if it wasn’t with me, pursue that? Why isn’t Crossbones somewhere in the mix? I think Crossbones was on screen for something like eight or 12 minutes, and you would think that this character was in 75 different movies the way every day people come up to me all day and talk about Crossbones. I’m taking pictures as if I was Captain America. So, I would do it in a heartbeat.”
It is quite surprising that Marvel didn’t do more with Crossbones, especially with an action star like Frank Grillo at the helm. The character was merely relegated to a cameo in Civil War, where the HYDRA agent finally assumed the role of Crossbones. The character does have a rich history and a prequel series would be a fantastic opportunity to delve deeper into some of the seedier sides of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Grillo did express his doubts regarding a series, citing how the studio would most likely go for a younger actor.
“I would love for a meeting to help them develop it. That would be great. It’s a great character, but if it does happen, that will probably happen with somebody half my age.
Even if Marvel did go for a younger actor, a dual story set in the past and present would be an interesting way to anchor the character of Crossbones, showing how he succumbed to HYDRA. The character is more popular than ever, so now would be the perfect time for Marvel to call Frank Grillo in for a meeting.
