Is Rick Flag Sr. the Nick Fury of the new DC Universe? Frank Grillo gives his thoughts on where his character fits in the upcoming reboot.
People have been keeping a close eye on Frank Grillo over the past few months. His character Rick Flag Sr. is the only one confirmed to appear in all three projects currently filmed for the DC Universe. This has led many to wonder how big a role he’ll truly be playing in the reboot, with speculation mounting that he may play a similar role to Phil Coulson in Phase 1 of the MCU.
Frank Grillo is willing to push that comparison one step further. When speaking about Rick Flag Sr.’s recurring appearances in the DC Universe, Grillo remarked that he believes his character to be more similar to Nick Fury than anyone else. This is due to the sheer amount of projects that the character is involved in, being dynamic enough to fill every role from a supporting cameo to a team leader.
“I’ll go a step further. I get a little bit of a Sam Jackson vibe,” Grillo explained in a recent chat with Collider. “It’s that kind of thing where he can swing through for a little bit, like in Superman, and have a critical, pivotal role, and then a bigger role, certainly, in Peacemaker, a very crucial role, and then is the leader of the team on Creature Commandos. So, yeah, I don’t know what the future holds, but I think Rick Flag is kind of the head of ARGUS, like the MCU with Jackson. I mean, you never know. It’s kind of endless.”
Frank Grillo’s Future In The DC Universe
Given Amanda Waller is confirmed to return in the reboot, Frank Grillo likely means he’ll be the face of ARGUS in the DC Universe, not the literal head. Though it certainly seems as if Rick Flag Sr. is inheriting the invincible nature of a character like Nick Fury. When speaking about his future with DC Studios, Grillo let slip that his character will survive all of the projects fans know about, and that he’s always open to do more in the future.
“I mean, Rick isn’t dead. So, I’m sure if there is a place for Rick in any other capacity, I’ll get the call. You know what I mean? But it’s been a gift. It’s been just amazing to be in this situation and to be around so much high-level talent. It’s just beautifully refreshing, and it’s like being around your family. It really is. It’s really easy to be here, which I really appreciate it.”
It may come as a decent shock to fans that Rick Flag Sr. survives the events of Peacemaker season 2 given what Christopher Smith did to his son. There may be some merit after all to the idea that Frank Grillo will end up being the Nick Fury of the DC Universe. The only hope then would be that Creature Commandos doesn’t end up like Secret Invasion!
