It seems as though the Ghost Rider may ride again. In a recent interview, Gabriel Luna revealed his openness to reprise his role as Robbie Reyes from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the MCU.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. shocked the world when the ABC series introduced Ghost Rider in its fourth season. The show often strayed from using big-name characters due to being dubiously canon with the MCU, so the appearance of one of Marvel’s most prominent mystic characters in Robbie Reyes made even the most disinterested of comic book fans take a glance.
Gabriel Luna’s take on Ghost Rider in Agents of SHIELD quickly became a fan-favorite. While the show’s continuity with the MCU grows less clear by the day, many fans still campaign for Luna to return as Robbie Reyes in one way or another. The actor opened up about this during an interview with Forbes for his new film FUBAR, saying not a day goes by he doesn’t hear about the role:
“Oh, I love that character. It was really special,” Luna told Forbes. “[Robbie Reyes as Ghost Rider] had only come into existence in 2014 , created by Felipe Smith, and then it was in 2016 that we did the show and literally not a day goes by that somebody doesn’t ask me about it.”
Just because fans are loud about something doesn’t always mean it’ll happen. Fans have called for wilder things in the MCU than Robbie Reyes’ Ghost Rider. However, it seems as though Gabriel Luna has heard the calls from fans and is open to reprising the character in the future:
“It feels like the demand may be there and if the creative is there and it makes sense….” He continued. “I think with Marvel right now, it’s so intricately woven that it would be a few years out if they started to think about it, to do the character. I’m always open.”
Gabriel Luna hasn’t always been so cavalier about reprising his role as Ghost Rider. According to the actor, he used to say he was content with how they handled Robbie Reyes on Agents of SHIELD and didn’t want to mess things up by returning in the MCU:
“My stock answer used to be, ‘I loved what we did, I’m very happy with what we accomplished and I can be happy leaving it on the shelf and admiring what we did and have the audience remember it fondly, the way they do,” He explained. “To do the character again just gives me another opportunity to screw it up…So there’s that mindset, but now I feel that I’m a lot more open should it come around. ”
While fans would be more than happy to see Gabriel Luna return as Robbie Reyes, it’s not a certainty Marvel Studios would even choose that version of the character if Ghost Rider debuted in the MCU. Johnny Blaze is the most iconic Ghost Rider to general audiences due to the series of films starring Nicolas Cage, whereas other Riders such as Danny Ketch and Alejandra Jones have yet to have truly proper starring roles. Fans can only hope Marvel has as much passion for the role as Gabriel Luna.
