Game of Thrones author George RR Martin is hoping to finish his next book in the beloved series, Winds of Winter, by sometime in 2021.
Martin had previously set an August 2020 deadline for the novel, going as far to say he would let New Zealand imprison him should the book not be ready in time for the World Science Fiction Convention, known as Worldcon.
But in a new post on his “Not a Blog” website, the author says he is making good use of his time in quarantine during the Coronavirus pandemic and making “steady” progress on the long-awaited installment.
“If nothing else, the enforced isolation has helped me write,” Martin writes. “I am spending long hours every day on THE WINDS OF WINTER, and making steady progress. I finished a new chapter yesterday, another one three days ago, another one the previous week. But no, this does not mean that the book will be finished tomorrow or published next week.”
Martin goes on to share his disappointment over having to cancel his plans for CoNZealand and that he still has much work left to do on the book but hopes to be finished by the next time the World Science Fiction Convention rolls around.
“I was heartbroken when CoNZealand was forced to go virtual due to the pandemic and I had to cancel my plans (exciting plans) for a long trip down to Wellington with Parris and my minion,” the Game of Thrones author wrote. “But there is definitely a silver lining in that cloud. The last thing I need right now is a long interruption that might cost me all the momentum I have built up. I can always visit Wellington next year, when I hope that both Covid-19 and THE WINDS OF WINTER will be done.”
The future of Game of Thrones will also be continuing on HBO. Earlier this year, HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys revealed the Game of Thrones prequel series House Of The Dragon, could be coming to the premium cabler in 2022. House Of The Dragon is the second prequel series that was developed after HBO opted not to move forward with the first prequel starring Naomi Watts.
Plot details for House of the Dragon remain under wraps but the series is set to follow House Targaryen 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
