Deadline reports Josh Whitehouse (Poldark) has landed a lead role in HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series.
Details on Whitehouse’s character remain under wraps. The actor joins Naomi Watts who was announced to star in the prequel’s pilot yesterday. Watts stars as a charismatic socialite who is hiding a dark secret.
Plot details for the series have not been revealed, nor has the series been officially titled, however, the logline for the untitled prequel is as follows: “Taking place thousands of years before the events of GAME OF THRONES, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”
Jane Goldman has written the series pilot. She serves as showrunner along with Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin who is executive producing the series with Vince Gerardis and Daniel Zelman. The pilot is one of four projects HBO revealed to be in the works with Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island), Brian Helgeland (Legend), and Carly Wray (Mad Men, The Leftovers) previously announced to develop other potential spin-offs.
The first spin-off from the premium cabler is not expected to debut until at least one year after the final season of Game of Thrones airs. The hit fantasy series is set to return for its final season in 2019. David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, Bryan Cogman and Dave Hill have written the final six episodes which are being directed by David Nutter and Miguel Sapochnik, with Benioff and Weiss helming the series finale.
