Giancarlo Esposito Clarifies Why He Wasn’t In Marvel’s ‘Loki’

The actor also spoke about his possible future in the MCU.

After previously revealing he was contacted about a role in the Marvel Disney Plus series Loki, Giancarlo Esposito has clarified the reason he didn’t appear in the show.

Loki followed the variant version of Loki introduced in Avengers: Endgame, who escaped the aftermath of the Battle of New York with the Tesseract. It saw him working with the Time Variance Authority and encountering alternate versions of himself from rogue timelines.

It appears one of these other Loki variants was almost played by Giancarlo Esposito. After earlier reports suggested Esposito had turned down the role, possibly in hopes of landing a Marvel movie role instead, the actor has now clarified he simply wasn’t chosen.

Will Giancarlo Esposito Join The MCU?

During an appearance at Rose City Comic-Con, Giancarlo Esposito spoke about the talks he had with Marvel over a role in Loki and how he ultimately didn’t land the part.

The Breaking Bad star revealed that while Marvel didn’t cast him for the role in Loki, it led him to consider pursuing a film role in the MCU. He’s certainly an actor several fans would like to see join the Marvel Cinematic Universe and he has previously pitched himself as Marvel’s new Professor X.

Speaking about the Loki casting process, Giancarlo Esposito said:

“The truth of the story Is this. about four years ago I met with Louis D’Esposito who [is] in the television unit of Marvel. And they had come to me to play possibly play Loki on the television side. And so I did not do [that part], and there were reasons for it. I think I wasn’t the one who was chosen [would] be the honest truth. But I would have maybe liked to do it…

“And then I thought when I wasn’t selected for that, that it would be great if I could be in a Marvel movie, not just a television show because I like films a lot. I love television, obviously I had a great run in the television world, doing last year was four shows at one time and the year before five shows.”

Given Giancarlo Esposito’s incredible screen presence and impressive career to date, it feels like giving him a one-off role in a TV series – presumably as one of the Loki variants encountered in the Void towards the end of the series – could have been a waste of an actor with the potential to bring to life a much larger MCU role on the big screen.
