Giancarlo Esposito has expressed interest in playing the MCU’s new Professor X.

Ever since Disney acquired 21st Century Fox, the big screen rights for both the Fantastic Four and the X-Men reverted back to Marvel Studios. Now, MCU fans are excited to see how both of those beloved properties are implemented into the ongoing canon. With that in mind, some have even expressed their wishes to see some new actors and actresses stepping into certain roles. One surprise is example is the prospect of Giancarlo Esposito playing Professor X.

As one of the most-acclaimed character actors in the industry, Giancarlo Esposito is known for his intimidating presence onscreen. The actor is widely-recognized for his role as Gustavo “Gus” Fring” in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, as well as his role as Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian among others. When asked about joining the MCU, potentially as Professor X, here’s what he said in a TikTok video from @countdowncitygeeks:

“So, I have not worked for Marvel yet. I’ve been in a room with them and talked with them, and to answer your question, I think what they do is on the lines of that mythological journey that Joe Campbell talked about, who happened to be a friend of George Lucas that George Lucas put into his stories. They do the same thing.

So, there’s been talk of Magneto, there’s been talk of Dr. Freeze, there has been talk of, who else are they talking about over there? Oh, Doom! And there is Professor X. Pick one? I’m going to go for something that is a little bit different. I’m going to go and put it out in the universe that it is Professor X.”

Replacing Patrick Stewart in the MCU?

Stepping into the role made famous by Patrick Stewart in the original X-Men films would be quite a daunting feat. However, Giancarlo Esposito would be a refreshing choice to play an updated version of Professor X, perhaps the version that would live within Earth-616. If the MCU decides to move on from Stewart’s version, and maybe not invite back James McAvoy, you can’t go wrong with this acclaimed character actor.

Professor X last appeared in the MCU film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Here is the synopsis:

The MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.

Directed by Sam Raimi from a script written by Michael Waldron, the MCU film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, with Michael Stuhlbarg, Rachel McAdams, John Krasinski, and Patrick Stewart.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is available now on Digital and Disney Plus, and will arrive on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on July 18th.
