The Mandalorian star Giancarlo Esposito opened up about why the Darksaber is so important to Moff Gideon in the second season of the Disney Plus series.
While fans will next see Giancarlo Esposito in the second season of The Boys, he’ll also have a large role in The Mandalorian season two. After his surprising debut at the end of the first season, his inclusion tied into the larger mythology in the Star Wars galaxy since he was shown wielding the Darksaber, originally created on the Mandalorian home world, Mandalore. The star recently spoke to Deadline about the upcoming season, and says he was inspired by Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin when it came to bringing his villainous presence to the screen.
“You could always read his mind through his eyes. I took a look at the imagery of this supreme chancellor, which really helped me. He is a supreme being in a sense. He knows it, but not everyone in the universe knows it. What we don’t know is how extra special he is yet.”
But more interestingly, The Mandalorian star Giancarlo Esposito discussed the Darksaber and its importance to Moff Gideon. He explained that the second season will explore its past, how Gideon found it and what he aims to do with it. Since Katee Sackhoff will seemingly reprise her role as Bo-Katan from Star Wars Rebels, the last known person to wield the Darksaber, many are speculating that the weapon will be the driving force of the second season.
“You’ll see more of the Darksaber, you’ll get the explanation of this ancient weapon to the modern world, a collapsed world. Where did this saber come from and how was it revived? It’s a key in our second season, which will be back sooner than later. (The saber) is a key to Moff Gideon’s past, which possibly has a lot to do with where he comes from and his desire to build a planet and bring it back together.”
