Alan Scott Actor Reveals There’s No Start Date For HBO Max’s ‘Green Lantern’ Series

The series was first announced back in 2019.

Alan Scott actor Jeremy Irvine says there’s no start date for HBO Max’s Green Lantern series.

A Green Lantern series for HBO Max was first announced back in 2019 ahead of the streaming service’s launch in May 2020. Since then, HBO Max has ordered ten one-hour episodes from writers Seth Grahame-Smith and Marc Guggenheim. The DC series has also cast Finn Wittrock as Guy Gardner and Jeremy Irvine as Alan Scott.

Despite there being some movement on the series, no significant updates have been shared by HBO Max in some time. In a recent interview, Alan Scott actor Jeremy Irvine provided an update on what he knows about the status of the series:

“I am very excited. At the same time, it’s been a project that’s been around for some time. As far as I know, there’s no start date, but when I get the call, I will pop on my green tights and be there. I think it’s a very difficult time at the moment to get any project off the ground and I know they want to do that project in a very large scale. I think getting all the stars to align on such an ambitious telling of that story is difficult, and I hope it all comes together at some point. But these things, unfortunately, take a long time and they take a lot of different aspects to all line up.

Is Green Lantern Doomed?

The lack of major updates could also relate to the current shift happening under new Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. The new CEO has already axed the development of a Wonder Twins film for HBO Max, with reports suggesting he’s looking to follow Marvel’s footsteps with DC.

Here is the official logline for the series:

From DC and HBO Max and Berlanti Productions comes a bold adaptation of the iconic comic book franchise: A saga spanning decades and galaxies. GREEN LANTERN will depict the adventures of a multitude of Lanterns, including Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz and Alan Scott—Earth’s first Green Lantern, who, true to the comics, is a gay man—and many more. The series will also include fan favorites such as Sinestro and Killowog, as well as introduce new heroes to the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps.

In addition to a Green Lantern series, HBO Max is also developing a Strange Adventures DC anthology series, a DC Super Hero High show from Elizabeth Banks, a Penguin spin-off starring Colin Farrell, and an Arkham Asylum series also set in the world of The Batman.

News of the Green Lantern series arrived shortly after reports of HBO Max planning to produce DC projects with budgets on par with those of feature films.
