The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has found a special place in the hearts of many fans, with much of that love coming in no small part to the friendship between Groot and Rocket Raccoon. The trilogy’s director James Gunn has finally revealed how the two met in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Guardians of the Galaxy was definitely the biggest gamble Disney had ever taken with the MCU at the time of its release, especially with how weird the characters were. At the time, Marvel Studios considered releasing short films, or “one-shots” as they were called, exploring the origins of key characters. One of those films focused on Rocket Raccoon and Groot. Director James Gunn recently revealed the plot of this scrapped short which was unable to finish filming due to the work load of the first film:
“Tibius Lark, Groot, and Rocket were all imprisoned in a deep well in the ground. Tibius was on the verge of dying. He explained to Rocket he had been caring for Groot for years. He was a former zookeeper in a shitty galactic-side zoo. He explained he had saved Groot, who was on exhibit there, [and] that Groot was a loyal friend. He asked Rocket to please take care of him, [and] then he died. As he died Rocket looked down in the dark cell & noticed he was a robot, the lower body of his body smashed open and mechanical.”
“The guards above ground heard something rumbling [and] they turned & saw Rocket & Groot bursting up from the ground, Rocket on Groot’s shoulder, & in Rocket’s hands was a machine gun made from Tibius Lark’s body, [and] he shot all the guards & they escaped & were together until they met the Guardians.”
Tibius Lark is a character mentioned in the Nova Corps’ file for Groot in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film. While nowhere near the groundbreaking storytelling James Gunn would be known for with the trilogy, it would have sure been a fun adventure to see. Really, any extra content with Rocket Raccoon and Groot would be a treat! Though must like all great heroes, some of their stories are simply left as legends.
What to expect from the third Guardians movie
