James Gunn has revealed that Stan Lee’s cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was directly influenced by fan theories.
Stan Lee, the master mind of Marvel’s many properties, appeared in every Marvel Cinematic Universe movie up to Avengers: Endgame in a cameo capacity. With every release, fans became absolutely joyous when the beloved creator appeared on screen, even if it was only for a few short seconds. His cameos always varied from film to film, which made many fans wonder if all of his appearances were connected. A new tweet by James Gunn confirms that Lee’s cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was inspired by fan theories that stated Stan Lee was a Watcher in the MCU.
In a response to a tweet discussing how canonical events should be dictated by the sheer coolness of things, James Gunn revealed that the Stan Lee cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was done with that sentiment in mind.
Sometimes, sure. For instance, Stan Lee's connection to the Watchers in Vol. 2 was definitely inspired by fan theories. https://t.co/qCey5GAJHS

The Watchers are beings from the Marvel comics who, as you guessed it, watch over the characters in the sprawling comic universe. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Stan Lee plays an informant of the Watchers, telling them of his many escapades on the planet Earth. The Watchers are, however, disinterested in his journeys. The fan theory of Lee being a Watcher was popular for a very long time and it’s great that James Gunn breathed life into it by not only adding weight to Lee’s character(s) but also memorializing the fan’s brilliant minds.

While production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was scheduled to begin early this year, the project was put on hold following Disney’s decision to remove James Gunn as the director of the final chapter in the trilogy. Now, Gunn will begin production on the third film after completing work on The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. and DC, which he is currently editing from the safety from his home due to the ongoing crisis. Details on the third chapter of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy are currently unknown, though the film will likely explore the ramifications of the universe-changing events in Avengers: Endgame.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki and Sean Gunn.
