HBO has begun casting for the Game of Thrones prequel series titled House of the Dragon.

It’s hard to believe that it has been a year since HBO aired the final episode of Game of Thrones. Though the final season of the fantasy series was mixed, it left behind a terrific legacy that thrust audiences into the golden age of television. Months after the series retired, it was revealed that author George R.R Martin would help pen a prequel series titled House of the Dragon, which details the beginning of the end of the Targaryen family. HBO sent the series straight to order and anticipated that it would hit television in 2022.

EW now reports that the Game of Thrones prequel is far along enough that casting has begun. Casting breakdowns aren’t available for House of the Dragon but much of the series will take inspiration from Martin’s Fire & Blood, which details the history of the Targaryen family. The outlet was able to reveal that House of the Dragon will eventually tackle the Dance of Dragons, a Targaryen led civil war that cause much of Westoros to be tossed into disarray. The Dance of Dragons was referenced numerous times in Game of Thrones, so it’ll be exciting to see it be played off in the prequel series.

The showrunners for House of the Dragon will be Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik. The latter is one of Game of Thrones most beloved directors, having shot the series’ most memorable episodes like “Battle of the Bastards” and “Hardhome“. Martin, alongside helping shape the series’ narrative, will also serve as an executive producer. The prequel series is expected to hit HBO sometime in 2021.
