HBO Unveils Open Casting Call For Upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ Reboot Series; Confirms Production Start Date

Could YOU be the next Harry Potter?

Could YOU be the Boy Who Lived!? HBO has revealed its open casting call for the Harry Potter reboot series, which inadvertently revealed when production will start.

Details about the upcoming Harry Potter series for HBO have been sparse ever since it was announced back in 2023. While the reboot has landed its showrunner and a director for quite a few episodes of the project’s first season, there hasn’t been much in the way of rumors of who could lead the project. That seems to be because the studio was always planning on holding an open casting call, allowing anyone to audition to play the Golden Trio of Hogwarts.

Interestingly, there don’t seem to be any demographic limitations for who can read for what characters in the Harry Potter reboot. The open casting call specifically states “We are committed to inclusive, diverse casting. For every role, please submit qualified performers, without regard to ethnicity, sex, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other basis protected by law unless otherwise specifically indicated,” This means it’s possible that HBO could cast anyone as Harry Potter, Hermione, and Ron; so long as they’re 9-11 years old at the time production begins.

The Harry Potter Reboot Gets Production Date

For those who read the open casting call closely, it’s noted that actors should be within the acceptable age range by April 2025. This implies that HBO will begin filming the Harry Potter series around that time. Or, at the very least, pre-production promotional images for the reboot will start to be taken during that period. This likely puts the release of the show, at the earliest and depending on the demands of VFX workers, in mid-to-late 2026.

All things considered, this is a surprisingly quick turnaround given the Fantastic Beasts series was only canned late last year. Three years to reboot something as massive as the Harry Potter franchise into an HBO series is an impressive feat, especially given how many sets and props need to be built before production even starts. Hopefully, this prestige series lands with fans better than the Percy Jackson reboot did with its fanbase!
