Henchmen gets hype!

Is Zach Cregger making a film in the DC Universe? New details about his Henchmen script reveals Batman’s role, alongside appearances from Joker and Harley Quinn.

One of the most shocking pieces of news to come out of the DC Universe in recent weeks wasn’t actually official news. Rather, it was a reveal that Zach Cregger, writer and director of horror darlings like Barbarian and Weapons, actually wrote a script on spec for the franchise. While originally reported as a movie about Joker and Harley Quinn, the truth is much more interesting.

Details about the project were revealed in a profile on Zach Cregger by The Hollywood Reporter. The film, tentatively titled Henchman, would follow a goon in the mean streets of Gotham who managed to incapacitate Batman. Joker and Harley Quinn would also appear in the movie. While their roles weren’t specified by the outlet, it’s likely they would be the antagonists, given their obsessive relationship with the Dark Knight.

Is Henchmen Officially In The Works?

Sadly for fans, it seems as though Henchmen is currently just a script written on spec (aka, written for an established property without a green light from the rights holders). Speaking on the project with Discussing Film, he has yet to pitch the project to James Gunn and DC Studios. However, if he got the chance to make it, he’d do it in a heartbeat.

“If I got the call, I would drop everything and go make that movie in a heartbeat. It’s my favorite thing I’ve ever written. I love it, and I’m dying to make it. I have not talked to James Gunn in my whole life. I don’t know him but I would certainly love to meet him and have the conversation. Who knows man?”

Henchmen sits in an odd place, as the DC Universe already has a horror film based in Gotham with Clayface. However, given Zach Cregger’s history with comedy, it’s also possible the film fits a different niche than the body-horror project. It would also be an interesting way to introduce Joker and Harley Quinn into the DC Universe, especially as it would focus on the Clown Prince of Crime aspects of the duo that have been neglected in recent years.

Henchmen is not currently in development at DC Studios. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
