Does the DC Universe have its Joker? Bill Skarsgård reveals his interest in playing the Clown Prince of Crime while speaking on the rumor he was up for the role of Lex Luthor.
Bill Skarsgård was a name on the mind of every DC Universe fan in 2023. The rumor mill was awash with reports that he and his brother Alexander were being eyed for roles in the DC Universe. Multiple characters were tossed out as speculation for who they could play, including Bruce Wayne and Joker. Though ultimately the rumor that would take root was the idea that both siblings were up for the role of Lex Luthor in the Superman film.
Of course, Nicholas Hoult would eventually land the role of Lex Luthor, with the rumor of Alexander and Bill Skarsgård being up for the part falling back into the endless ocean of noise for people to forget the next time their favorite scooper gets a report. Yet the rumor itself was never deconfirmed. When asked about if there was any truth to him joining the DC Universe on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Skarsgård admitted that neither he or his brother were ever up for the role.
Is Bill Skarsgård Playing Joker?
While debunking a rumor like this would usually crush the hearts of fans hoping that Bill Skarsgård would join the DC Universe, it’s likely to invigorate those campaigning for him to play the Joker in Batman: The Brave and The Bold, which is helmed by former IT director Andy Muschietti. Skarsgård admitted that he had spoken to the director about the status of the project, and even revealed his desire to play the Man Who Laughs.
“There’s a pretty cool Joker in me,” Skarsgård explained when asked about the possibility of joining the DC Universe by Josh Horowitz. “And it would be very sick.”
Given how far away Batman: The Brave and The Bold is from entering production, it’s not likely that Bill Skarsgård will be cast as the Joker anytime soon. However, his interest in the role combined with having previously worked with Andy Muschietti may mean good things for him joining the DC Universe in an upcoming project, regardless of who he might play.
