Is Batman: The Brave and The Bold in major trouble? James Gunn gives his thoughts on the recent wave of worry about the upcoming DC Universe film.
It’s been an interesting week for the DC Universe. Fans were riding high this past month with the release of the first trailer for James Gunn’s Superman reboot, seemingly angling to end the new year on a high note. Yet that all came crashing down this past weekend with reports that The Batman Part II had been delayed to 2027 due to Matt Reeves still working on the script. To make matters worse, director Andy Muschietti also came out to say that Batman: The Brave and The Bold had been delayed, with him working on another film before tackling the project.
This led many to assume that Batman: The Brave and The Bold was delayed as to not overlap with The Batman Part II in some way. However, it seems things may be more complicated than it seems at first blush. When asked about the recent reports, James Gunn revealed that the upcoming DC Universe project for the Caped Crusader has, in fact, not been delayed despite the director’s claims.
“The Brave and the Bold hasn’t been delayed,” James Gunn wrote on Bluesky in response to the reports. “So I’m not sure what you’re talking about.”
Is Batman: The Brave And The Bold Delayed?
What seems to be going on here is some good ol’ fashioned miscommunication. To reestablish the facts, Andy Muschietti was originally set to direct Batman: The Brave and The Bold for the DC Universe following his commitment to the Max series Welcome to Derry. However, as of this moment, the project is not ready, leading to him working on another film before then. But since the film has not been officially greenlit with a release date, James Gunn himself does not consider it delayed.
This largely comes down to the fact that Andy Muschietti (largely) does not write his own films, with his last DC Universe project in The Flash being written by Christina Hodson. It’s likely someone else will also write Batman: The Brave and The Bold. So while from his perspective a lack of a script means that production is delayed, James Gunn likely simply hasn’t found a pitch for the film that he feels will do the character justice in his writer-centric reboot.
